Il padre di Marta scomparve nel 1975 quando lei non era ancora nata, risucchiato nel gorgo del terrorismo che aveva cominciato a insanguinare l’Italia. Carlo Saronio, figlio di una delle famiglie più benestanti di Milano, non aveva ancora ventisei anni quando venne tradito dagli amici con cui condivideva ideali rivoluzionari. Marta per anni non ha mai fatto domande, immersa in un faticoso silenzio. Ma non si può vivere in eterno con i fantasmi, arriva sempre il giorno in cui dobbiamo fare i conti con le memorie, anche le più dolorose. Così le ho detto di sì, e ho cominciato un viaggio alla ricerca delle tracce di quel ragazzo che viveva sospeso tra due mondi inconciliabili, che trovò il coraggio di scegliere la sua strada quando era troppo tardi. Scavando nei ricordi di una Milano in cui il passato è ancora presente tra noi, sono riuscito a riannodare i fili di una storia mai raccontata, che appartiene anche a me.

I’ve never met him, but he’s always with me.” For months this request, which came at the end of a presentation of “The Morning After”, remained buried in my thoughts. Then, an e-mail from a missionary who lives in the Algerian desert convinced me to go on a journey. Marta’s father disappeared in 1975 when she was not yet born, sucked into the maelstrom of terrorism that had begun to bloody Italy. Carlo Saronio, son of one of the wealthiest families in Milan, was not yet twenty-six when he was betrayed by the friends with whom he shared revolutionary ideals. For years Marta has never asked questions, immersed in an exhausting silence. But you can’t live forever with ghosts, the day always comes when we have to deal with even the most painful memories. So I said yes, and I began a journey in search of the traces of that boy who lived suspended between two irreconcilable worlds, who found the courage to choose his path when it was too late. Digging into the memories of a Milan where the past is still present among us, I managed to re-tie the threads of an untold story, which also belongs to me.
